Facebook Ad Image Sizes in 2020

With 1.5 billion active daily users and making over $55 billion in ad revenue, Facebook is the chief social media platform to place your ads. And naturally, you want your Facebook lead generation ads to stand out to your target demographic.

But creating an ad to capture your audience takes a lot of thinking, especially if you want to want to make it visually compelling. So there’s two things you need to look out for: image size and enticing visuals.

Creating a refined yet edgy ad campaign is tricky on its own but if you’re not updated with the latest image sizes released by Facebook, your efforts could go to waste.

Facebook likes to change their UI depending on the needs of a majority of their users. This also includes making adjustments to image sizes such as profile pictures, cover photos and, yes, ad images. Below is a cheat sheet of Facebook ad sizes you need to know.

Standard Image Size for Facebook Ads

Before anything else, do know that Facebook ads are not just the ones you see in your newsfeed as you scroll down. There are many placements that Facebook offers, including:

  • Mobile and Desktop News Feed
  • Desktop Right Column
  • Facebook Stories
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Facebook Search Results
  • Messenger Inbox
  • Carousel
  • Other Apps and Sites

So we understand if it can get confusing. On Facebook, one size does not fit all so take a look at what the recommended sizes are for reach placement.

Mobile and Desktop News Feed

  • Image ratio: 1.91:1 to 4:5
  • Primary Text: 125 characters

Desktop Right Column

  • Recommended resolution: at least 1,200 x 1,200px
  • No in-image text necessary
  • Primary Text: 125 characters
  • Headline: 25 characters
  • Description: 30 characters

Facebook Stories

  • Facebook advises that advertisers leave 14% of the top and bottom of the image free from text and logos to avoid covering these key elements with the profile icon or call-to-action.
  • Image ratios: 1.91 to 9:16

Facebook Marketplace

  • Recommended resolution: at least 1,200 x 1,200px
  • Headline: 25 characters
  • Description: 30 characters

Facebook Search Results

  • Recommended resolution: at least 1,080 x 1,080px
  • Primary Text: 125 characters
  • Headline: 25 characters
  • Description: 30 characters

Messenger Inbox

  • Minimum Image Width: 254 pixels
  • Minimum Image Height: 133 pixels
  • Primary Text: 125 characters

Carousel

  • Image size: 1080 x 1080 pixels
  • Minimum cards per ad: 2 images
  • Maximum cars per ad: 10 images

Take note that there are more ad placements on Facebook – these are just the most commonly used placements and highly recommended by advertisers.

About the 20% Text

In late September 2020, Facebook had announced that they will be removing their restrictions to keep ad image text within 20% of the image. While this is good news for many businesses that are challenged with keeping text to a minimum, the social media giant still encourages keeping text within 20% of the image as they have found that such ads perform better.
